MAC TIPS AND TRICKS: Thursday, 2/2 @ 10 am

For the Mac owner who already knows his/her way around a Mac, but would like to learn some additional tricks and shortcuts that will enhance the usability of their Mac. In this class we will cover: Finding files faster and more efficiently; customizing the mouse and keyboard; setting up “Hot Corners”; really erasing files from the computer; ejecting a DVD or CD that refuses to be ejected; forcing a program to quit when that wheel just won’t stop spinning; and finally, shutting your Mac down when it freezes.

Library Receives Donation of Optelec Clear View Reader Magnifier

The library is pleased to announce to availability of a magnifier reader for all low vision patrons. Thanks to a generous donation, the library now has the Optelec Clear View Reader. The reader is available on the second floor along the western windows. Ask the Adult Department Librarians if you have any qeustions.

The ClearView video magnifier is designed for the benefit of low vision people, including those with age-related macular degeneration. Many low vision people have discovered the joys of using the ClearView in their daily lives. Designed with simplicity in mind, place a newspaper or magazine on the movable reading table, beneath the built-in camera. The Auto-Zoom feature of the ClearView⁺ adjusts the on-screen level of magnification and image appearance automatically, regardless of the original document font size and colour. For those wishing to make the adjustments manually, a simple one-button control can be used to control magnification and image modes for reading text and viewing pictures in full colour, high contrast black-on-white and white-on-black.

With all the computer technology the library provides its patrons, it is hard to believe the library still has an electric typewriter for patrons to use. Located on the second floor along the western windows, the typewriter is there for any to use. Ask the second floor desk Adult librarians if you have any questions. We have a Panasonic Jet Writer.

Digital LCD Projector

The Farmington Library is excited to announce that a LCD projector is now available for overnight loan to Farmington/Unionville residents. This projector is light and can be used for presentations and is compatible with most laptops. A charging cord and monitor cord are included in the check out kit. Loans are reserved to Farmington Library card holders and are for overnight use only. The item must be returned inside the library the following business day and borrowers must sign a replacement agreement in case of damage. For information or to reserve the projector call the Adult department at 860-673-6791.

FARMINGTON LIBRARIES TO OFFER DOWNLOADABLE MUSIC FROM THEIR WEBSITE

(Farmington, CT)—(11/23/2010)— The Farmington Libraries have joined Library Ideas’ network of Public Library websites that offer access to songs from Sony Music’s catalog of legendary artists.

The service will allow the the Farmington Libraries to increase the size and diversity of its collection by offering access to hundreds of thousands of songs.

Under the terms of the agreement, registered card holders of the Farmington Libraries can download a select number of Sony Music tracks in the MP3 format each month at no direct cost via http://www.farmingtonlibraries.org/. Patrons are limited to three downloads per week and use their library card and establish Farmington Libraries' catalog password to access the service. The library will underwrite the purchase of the music.

Other libraries participating in the launch include the Princeton (NJ) Public Library, Maricopa County Library District (AZ), Orange County Public Library (FL), Nashville Public Library (TN) and Fairfield Public Library (CT).

“We have been waiting a long time for a service like this that delivers great music, compatibility with lots of devices and simplicity of use. We think this will be incredibly popular with our patrons and will help the library in marketing all its services to the community,” said Hal Bright, Director of Adult Services.

“Sony Music has an incredibly expansive and popular catalog and we are really excited to partner with them on this, a very important product for libraries,” said Brian Downing, co-founder of Library Ideas. “A library is a focal point of the community that requires many tools to excite people about library resources. More than anything, that is the reason for the service.”

House Project

"Add to List" feature in catalog

The Add to List feature allows you to make a list of items that are stored in the "My List" part of the catalog. It creates a list which can be emailed or printed. Unfortunately, it does not allow you to place all the books on Hold all at once. That has to be done individually. When you click "Add to List" the button changes to "Remove" which indicates which items you have placed on a list. You can click "Remove" to take the the item off the list. If you need to go back, click on the words "Go Back", not the back arrow on your browser.

To access the "My List" part of the catalog look in the pale green toolbar near the top of the list that "Go Back" is in, click, "My List". Here you have a brief list of the titles you have added, you can click View, Print Formatted, or enter an email address in the little box and click "Email" to send someone (like us flref@farmingtonlibct.org to place the list on hold for you)

The last thing to know about my list that you can do multiple searches and continue adding to your list for about 10-15 minutes. So you can make a list of best sellers you want put on hold, or a list of books you want us to pull, and just email us the list which is faster for you than placing the books on hold individually.

The computers in the Information Services Department have been moved temporarily to make way for a new computer area configuration. There are currently 10 computers available for public use, located in the department. Ask a staff member for assistance. We thank you for your patience in this time of transition.

Library offers 1-on-1 Computer Classes

The Information Services Department is offering patrons one-on-one computer classes. These classes cover basic instruction on searching the internet, e-mail accounts and word. The classes are 30 minutes long. Please call to register at 673-6791. Classes will be held on the following dates:

Wednesdays, 5/14, 5/21 and 5/28 at 10:00 and 10:30 a.m.
